What’s Really Behind the Claim that Fidgeting Is Good for You?

Hearing that scientists are now saying a bad habit such as fidgeting may be good for health certainly makes a person pay attention. As can be expected, there’s a little bit more to this claim than what can be gleaned from the surface. The study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, claimed that shifting and moving around in your chair can help combat the negative effects that sitting down for too long can have on the body. Considering how often many of us spend our days sitting down, this is news which is important for many of us to take in.

Why Sitting Can Be So Dangerous

Out of all the negative habits that are out there to be exploited — smoking, drinking, indulging in junk food — sitting down hardly seems to be a threat to our health, yet that’s exactly what it has the potential to be. This is because so many of us stay seated for very long portions of the day on a regular basis. From commuting to and from work, to plopping down in front of a computer screen in an office, to sitting at the table for dinner and moving to the couch to relax before heading to bed, our lives are largely sedentary. Over time, this lack of regular movement and activity can lead to an increase in the development of such illnesses and diseases as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, obesity, and many sleep disorders such as insomnia.

Breaking the Pattern

There are a few key things you have the power to do in order to keep yourself from sitting down for too long. First, take frequent breaks from sitting. Take breaks as often as you can. Even if you only have the ability to stand up and stretch your arms, this is better than nothing. Try to go no more than two hours at a time without some sort of break. Next, you should try to fit more exercise into your life. Go for a jog in the morning, take the stairs instead of the escalator, or run on the treadmill at home while watching TV.

Finally, you should consider turning to chiropractic care to help strengthen and support back and spine health. Chiropractic treatments are a great addition to holistic lifestyles, which aim to help the body heal from the inside out using completely natural and safe methods.
